"One of the many delights of playing jazz on a bassoon is to find yourself performing for audiences that are totally taken with something so unusual and different. I have found that when I perform programmes divided between classical and jazz, the audiences react even more strongly to the jazz segment of the concert than the classical section, even audiences at classical concerts and festivals who have no particular knowledge of jazz. The first half of my concert will consist of classical selections accompanied by piano, then a bass player and drummer are added after the interval for jazz selections."

Early preview review
… what to expect from BLUE BASSOON reviews in 2009!

Blue Bassoon (5/4)

O's Notes: “When we first met Dan, a world-class classical bassoonist in Europe in 2005, he was just getting into jazz. He was contemplating the best way to excite jazz fans. We talked about his project Bebop Bassoon and soon afterwards the CD was released. It was pretty good and definitely unique. Smith became an obsessed student of jazz since then and has improved his chops measurably. He trades blows with pianist Martin Bejerano on "The Double Up" without missing a beat. Ludwig Afonso (d) and Edward Perez (b) keep the bottom tight and add some impressive solos as well. Dan makes the bassoon, a rather melancholy instrument sound at home in jazz space. Listen to him cook on "Billie's Bounce" and "Solid" and you'll know what we mean. Larry Campbell (g) is featured on a couple of blues tracks to break up the pace. Smith brings freshness to these standards with his bassoon. I think he'll be around for a while - a good thing!”
